Rubbish Collection

RUBBISH - Use plastic trash bags and place at the street before 7:00 a.m., but not earlier than 7:00 p.m. of the preceding evening.   Plastic bags must be tied.   The bags may be placed in trash cans not exceeding 32 gallons in capacity.  Total weight is not to exceed 50 pounds.

GLASS AND SHARP OBJECTS - wrap glass and sharp objects in heavy newspaper.

CARDBOARD BOXES -  must be flattened and tied together.

CARPETING - must be rolled/bundled/tied in four foot lengths no heavier than 50 pounds each.

LATEX PAINT - Lids must be removed and any leftover paint must be completely dry.  Cat litter or sand may speed up the drying process.  Oil base paint is a hazardous material, see below.

HAZARDOUS WASTE - Do not dispose of hazardous waste with your rubbish.  Contact the Macomb County Health Department at 586-469-5467 for drop-off schedules.

APPLIANCES, SPECIAL PICK-UPS - call Waste Management one day prior to your regular rubbish day at 1-800-796-9696 to arrange for the removal of appliances.   Doors must be removed from refrigerators, washers, dryers, etc.  Furniture, mattresses and box springs do not require a special pick-up.

CONSTRUCTION MATERIALS, ROCKS, DIRT, SOD, BRICKS OR CONCRETE - are not considered household rubbish and will not be removed by the trash hauler.

YARD WASTE

YARD WASTE/COMPOST - yard waste removal runs from approximately mid-April to the end of November each year.  This shortened season helps to keep your costs lower.  All leaves, grass and other yard waste must be placed in either paper compost bags or 32 gallon trash cans with no bags.  The trash cans must be affixed with a compost sticker which is available at the Department of Public Works or by calling 586-286-9465.  Compost containers must not be heavier than 50 pounds.

BRANCHES - branches less than four feet in length which are bundled and less than 50 pounds per bundle may be placed at the curb with compost.  Do not put branches in cans or bags.  For larger branches call the Department of Public Works at 586-286-9465 to schedule the chipper truck.

RECYCLABLE ITEMS

GLASS BOTTLES AND JARS  -  unbroken clear, green or brown jars or bottles.  No window glass, mirrors, pyrex, ceramics or dishes are accepted.

METAL CANS  -  tin and aluminum cans are accepted. 

PLASTIC BOTTLES & CONTAINERS  -  plastics numbered 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, and 7 are accepted.  Look on the bottom of the container for the number.  Rinse out the container and throw the lids in with the regular trash.  Labels are okay. 

BATTERIES  -   small household batteries are to be placed in a clear plastic bag and then in the recycling container.  No car batteries.

GLOSSY MAGAZINES & CATALOGS - bundle several at a time with string or strong rubber band and place in the recycle bin.

BOXBOARD  -  cereal boxes, shoe boxes and similar type material.  Flatten and place in a brown paper bag or bundle.  Place in recycle bin.

CORRUGATED CARDBOARD  -  fold or cut and place in separate brown paper bag or bundle in 2 foot by 2 foot wide bundles and place next to recycle bin. 

NEWSPAPERS/TELEPHONE BOOKS  -  place in a paper bag or bundle.

JUNK MAIL - Put in a paper or plastic bag and place in recycle bin.

OFFICE PAPER - Put in a paper or plastic bag and place in recycle bin.

KITCHEN COOKWARE  -  Place clean metal pots, pans, tins and utensils in recycle bin.

PLASTIC BAGS  -  Most retail and grocery bags are acceptable.  Put all bags in one bag and place in recycle bin.

HOLIDAY SCHEDULE

HOLIDAYS - When a holiday falls during the normal work week, collection will be made the following day with Friday's collection on Saturday. The following holidays will be observed:

  • New Year's Day
  • Memorial Day
  • 4th of July
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Day
