Macomb County's largest community blood drive adds nearly 300 pints of blood to help hundreds of people in need

CLINTON TOWNSHIP’S GENEROUS DONORS HELP THOSE IN NEED AT 2013 COMMUNITY-WIDE BLOOD DRIVE

(Clinton Township, Mich.) - The Clinton Township community gave the gift of life at the 14th annual Clinton Township Community Blood Drive on March 12-13, 2013. The blood drive, conducted together with the American Red Cross, took place at six locations throughout the township. The locations for the blood drive were the Clinton Township Senior Center, L’Anse Creuse Wheeler Community Center, Baker College of Clinton Township, Clintondale High School, Chippewa Valley High School, and the Clinton Township Police Station. The Clinton Township Blood Drive is one of the largest community blood drives in southeast Michigan.

Some statistics:
On any given day in southeastern Michigan, the American Red Cross reports that 43 hospitals in five counties use 900 pints of blood. During the 2013 Clinton Township Blood Drive, the Red Cross collected 290 pints from 362 people, which is one-third of what is needed in one day. All of the blood will be divided into three blood products: red blood cells, plasma and platelets. 870 people will receive life-saving blood from Clinton Township’s 2013 community-wide blood drive.
Over the 14-year span of this blood drive, with 6723 donors presenting to give blood and 5586 usable pints collected, 16,758 people have received life-saving blood because of Clinton Township’s generosity through the community blood drive.
“The annual Clinton Township Community Blood Drive is always successful in creating awareness of the need to give blood and in offering opportunities for generous donors in our community and beyond to provide life-saving blood and blood products for the many individuals in need,” adds Clinton Township Treasurer Bill Sowerby, blood drive chairman, who first came forward with the idea of a community-wide blood drive in 1999. “I am very pleased and thankful to this community, and so are the recipients to whom the blood is going.”

Under the “Salute Our Armed Forces” theme of the blood drive, many individuals also took the opportunity to send a card to a soldier to let them know that they gave blood in honor of the service that the members of the U.S. armed forces provide.
